This chapter is entitled "David's song of praise." It's a worship song which speaks first of David's deliverance from mortal danger, next to the moral grounds for God's saving him and finally it recounts the help that the Lord gave him. To put it into context, it was probably written after David's military victories, but before his sin with Bathsheeba. The first thought that strikes me is that David freely acknowledges the source of his victories. He is not haughty and proud of what appear on the exterior as triumphs he has achieved, but David gives credit to God. I often wrestle within myself over the part I play in even the small spiritual victories I see happen in my life. The Holy Spirit deserves the credit, a fact which is plain to me if I only for a moment reflect on how I have responded to circumstances prior to my coming into relationship with Jesus. Christ changes us from within, and it is He who is to be acknowledged when we see growth in our walks. Next David uses great poetry to describe the strength and majesty of God's working in his life. Verses 8-20 refer to the earth trembling, smoke rising from His nostrils, parting the heavens, soaring on the wings of the wind and a thundering voice as ways of poetically expressing the power of our God as He works His will to protect us from the enemy in our life. David faced military foes. We face the enemy spiritually (we do not wage war against the flesh, but against the powers of darkness spiritually.) We fight anger, aloneness, pride, envy, lust - and such...God turns to us to guide our path as we turn to Him prayerfully for His support. Verse 20 is comforting - "He delighted in me."
God delighted in the heart of David who, despite the failures he demonstrated in his walk, he always turned back to the Lord with a true heart of contrition and repentence. David showed his desire to please the Lord/that delighted God. That formed the moral basis for God showing up in his defense. He will do the same for us. In 2 Chron. 7:14 we are taught that if we humbly pray, seek His face and repent, God will hear, forgive and heal us. He looks at our hearts, not our actions. And how does He respond? Scattered throughout verses 32-40 we see references to Him arming us (with His Word, today), standing beside us (paraclete/Holy Spirit), enabling us (He will always provide a way out from temptation), shielding us (with Holy discernment.) We fall in our daily walk not as a result of God turning from us, but from our straying off from the path which seeks first His kingdom and righteousness. As our hearts turn back to Him, we find Him present and awaiting us with open, loving arms to receive back His sheep. David concludes with the praise of "the Lord lives - exalted be God, the Rock, my Savior." It is true for us as well, even today, 3,000 years after this praise and worship song was written by David.
