So, I think it's kind of cool that we can drop that meebo chat thing right into the webpage, but I don't really like how it works right now:

* Any time that you follow a link you show up multiple times
* Its current location just looks ugly
* Lots of people from outside the community will be presented with it (and some jerk will probably post inappropriate stuff, eventually)

So I'm brainstorming other ways to do it. Such as:

* Bury it in a blog (like Benji did originally) and then put a link to it on the main page. I don't like this, because the only way this chat will be used much is if it is visible.
* Put it only on the home page. One interesting possibility is that I could code things such that it would appear mixed in with the news, always as the 2nd news item. That would keep it visible, but allow Eric & Rod to post things which show up above it.

Other things I'm thinking of:

* Should the chat require a password?

I'm open to any ideas. Thoughts?

the opinion of: me. :)

it has indeed been funny and cool to participate in this form of IM-ing or whatever you want to call it. the past year at college I've not been on forms of really chatting online because it takes so much more time to do so (for example, why not just call someone?) and because it has created drama in my life. but lo, I would enjoy nothing more than to instant message/chat with lovely village people like yourselves. :)

in my opinion, again, porn or some other person will happen if someone is really committed to doing so - which is sad. :/ so a password would not be a horrible idea at all.

umm okay bye!!!

It is possible to have meebo chat be password protected, unfortunately that prevents someone visiting our site to join any conversations. An open chat room is a scary thing but I'm not terribly comfortable with too much censorship either. The main reason I would support no password for chat is that it only retains about 30 lines of chat. Any porn links would not have to remain untill Russ got rid of it, rather you could just repeat "bla bla" 30 times. If the chat is being abused we could rethink the password idea, but until that happens I vote for no pass. As for placement I think being a constant 2nd news item on the front page would be a good place.

seems like the phrase "waiting for ...meebo.org" is constantly at the bottom of my browser window. Could that be why I had trouble downloading the you-tube video on the front page or is that some other random problem. In other words, is this gonna gum up the system?
