Subject: Definition of Freedom

Just a thought: We Americans used to define freedom as "you can't tell me what not to do." We were worried about having freedom of action - freedom to do what we wanted. Now, I think that our definition of freedom is becoming something more like "you can't tell me what I am." We want freedom of identity - the freedom to think of ourselves the way we want, to not be lumped into categories or labels, to believe what we want.
So if we wrote a Constitution today, what would the Bill of Rights say? What things might be banned that are currently allowed? Would we give up some of the rights that are currently protected, and not notice the difference?
One further thought: how much of our current culture of identity came about because of the guarantees that the Constitution gave us? If we lost those freedoms, would we change back to a culture that valued freedom of action, or become something totally new? |
