A parable:

Once, there was a great chasm. On either side of the chasm, great cities stood, built on the immovable, reliable bedrock. The people of the cities, of course, wanted to be able to travel back and forth. So they set out to build a bridge over the chasm.

The cities hired the most brilliant surveyors, engineers, and builders. They carefully measured the chasm, designed the bridge, and built it. Each city built half of the bridge, and they were to meet in the middle.

Strangely, when the two bridges reached the middle, the people found that they did not line up with each other. They could not connect one to the other. Some people proposed that the bridges be twisted and bent so that they would match, but wiser heads prevailed: each bridge was carefully examined so that the fault could be found and rectified.

However, no one could find fault with either bridge; each seemed to be flawless in every way. No one could explain why the two bridges could not meet. The people agreed that the only solution was to simply use the bridge as it stood. Each person crossing the bridge would have to jump over The Gap. But, from time to time, people fell into the chasm and were lost. It was hoped that one day, some Great Engineer would appear, who would explain how to fix The Gap.

This went on for many years. Other people tried building other bridges to cross the chasm; they tried different designs, different locations, different methods. All bridges ended up with a Gap.

From time to time, engineers argued about The Gap: was it fundamental to the chasm, something that was meant to be? Or was it true that someday a Great Engineer come along who could fix it?

Then, someone appeared with a new idea: perhaps some chasms are not meant to ever be bridged.

The people wondered: Who is right?
