I lost half my hearing in my left ear a couple of years ago due to a virus attack on the inner ear. Today I had an aid installed into the ear canal. The major selling point of this aid is that it is invisible. I am not so vain that I think I need invisible aids, but I am ADD and the thought of having to remove an aid every day at regular times to clean it and install batteries was beyond what I thought I'd be able to do. This little gadget is amazing. The audiologist programed it and installed it deep into the ear and all of a sudden I can hear birds chirping and paper rustling and all kinds of cool sounds I have forgotten.

In some ways, I have to learn to hear again. Noises are louder and more pronounced. I was given a little magic wand that I stick in my ear that can make the aid louder or softer or put it into 'sleep mode'. It will take a bit of time to optimize the sound quality and get used to wearing
it. I called Kathy to tell her the good news, and my iPhone caused the aid to go into sleep mode. So apparently I have to hold the phone to my right ear in order to avoid the shutdown issue. I had forgotten a lot of sounds in the last few years. It is sweet to start recovering them.

This thing gets removed and thrown away when the battery goes dead. They toss it in the trash and program a new one with your profile and pop it into your ear. It costs a $143.75 dollars a month for this thing. For the rest of my life it will be at least $1,725 a year. Insurance will pay $1,250 every three years so that brings the monthly cost to $109.03.

So the question is: Is it worth $109.03 a month to have fun hearing again?

I've been thinking about your dilemma - having to pay (a lot!) for one of your senses. And being such a sensory-based person myself, I was trying to imagine what that might be like. Did you come to any conclusions? I know you love music, and despite how annoying some sounds can be, there are a lot of good ones! But that is a lot...I'm sad that our society doesn't allow things like this to be more accessible for the not super-rich...
