It was a leisurely morning. We took a look at the hotel breakfast and decided to go elsewhere. We ended up at Briggs Restaurant. Excellent omelets and really good home fries. We remembered to order iced tea and not 'sweet tea' which is everywhere here in the south. We entered our Beaufort destination into the GPS and headed toward the ocean. Trees and water and green grass everywhere. The only thing more plentiful than tobacco and cotton fields and Bojangles Restaurants is Baptist and Pentecostal churches. Every fifty feet it seemed like there was another church. There were Primitive and Free Will and Reformed and Southern and Conservative and every other kind of Baptist you can think of. My favorite church was the Fountain of Life Biker Church which meets in a building in front of a graveyard. The sign said everyone was welcome but we didn't stop.
Satellite radio is way cool. We tuned it to the '60s station and rocked out. Well, sort of... They played some Credence and some Three Dog Night and some other pretty good stuff, but then they played Bobby Sherman and Bobby Goldsboro and some other Bobbies and Kathy was rocking out and singing along and we may have to get a divorce now since she actually turned the sound up for Bobby Sherman's La, La, La. I remember wondering if we could survive marriage since she hated all the good music and loved the bubble gum stuff. Still, it was fun rockin' out to the oldies as we made the three and a half hour drive.
We found the Lighthouse Cottage and the nice lady who gave us the key also gave us a million tips on things to do and places to go. It was a delight to hear that slow southern drawl. We drove around a bit and stopped at a Piggly Wiggly for some groceries and snacks. We then walked down to the harbor and remembered we were hungry since it was after 5:00 and it had been a long time since breakfast. We ate at Clausen's and I had Shrimp and Grits. Wow, it was way yummy. Bacon and veggies and shrimp mixed into creamy, cheesy grits. I never had them before, but it is a Southern thing and I had to try them. Kathy had the grilled Tuna and Coconut Rice with a fresh fruit salsa. It was also very good. We started the meal with a seafood bisque that was out of this world and had a great time enjoying the quaint setting.
We walked along Front Street and window shopped and then sat on the pier and watched the sun set. Amazing colors and the lapping of the water and the yachts and sailboats bobbing on the water. Gorgeous and peaceful and restful. Didn't want to walk away. One of those moments you wish would last forever.
We got back to the cottage late and sat and watched "Blues Brothers". Kind of weird, I know, but the other choice was "Jaws" and we are planning to spend some time on the water so that seemed a little too much. We've arranged to go to the wild horse island on Thursday and we are also going to check out the dolphins. We should also be able to collect lots of shells and picnic out on the island.
We haven't figured out how to spend the last few days of our trip, but are considering heading toward the Blue Mountains. We'll see what happens...
I'm off to bed.
