We rose before dawn and finished packing. A bit of breakfast and the last minute look around to make sure we remembered everything we wanted to take. Cameras, binoculars, various and sundry power cords, jackets, sandals, hats. Things I don't normally pack when I travel. I even remembered the car charger for my IPhone since we would be traveling around the state of North Carolina and the GPS would be helpful. We hustled off to the airport and arrived with lots of time before the plane left, only to discover that I had left my IPhone at home. No more GPS. No more electronic copies of reservations and directions. No more access to e-mail and telephone calls. So Derek drove like the wind back to our house and then raced back to the airport. He made a brilliant moving hand off at the airport curb and I ran through security and arrived at the gate with minutes to spare before they closed the doors. A bit of nerve rattling start to the trip, but all was well.

The next stop was Dallas/Fort Worth airport. I hate that airport, but this time things went well. We had a rather long layover and found a nice booth in a restaurant and enjoyed a shrimp dish and just chatting. We window shopped at the Barnes and Noble and then headed to the plane. The nice lady at the desk switched our seats to ones with more leg room so that made me very happy. We arrived in Raleigh, NC a few minutes early and took the shuttle to Enterprise where the guy at the desk tried his hardest to up sell me to something bigger than the mid-size I had ordered. After numerous refusals he finally gave me a huge leather seated SUV with built in GPS and satellite radio. Very cool.

We found our hotel and were excited to read that their restaurant was open until 11:00pm. Since it was about 10:15 we rushed from our room only to be informed by the front desk that the restaurant was closed. The man at the desk was sorry and gave us some free drinks and we ordered a pizza.

As usual I am wide awake--it is only 9:00pm our time--but Kathy is snoring away in bed. It has been a long day and I will join her soon. Tomorrow we head to Beaufort which is a three hour drive from here in on the outer banks of North Carolina. We have a cottage near the beach until Sunday and then we plan to just drive around and stop where the Spirit leads. Between frequent flier miles and credit card points this is a pretty cheap vacation, but I am really looking forward to seeing a part of the world I have never seen.

I may or may not keep you posted depending on how lazy I get over the next few days. :)

Rod
