Our God does crazy things!
Last year I applied at Pima Community College to teach as an adjunct professor. Some time later, I heard I was ‘certified’ to teach in the religion department. Great. But no offer to teach . . .
A few weeks ago I got a call from the religion department chair at the Desert Vista campus. We had some dialogue, a meeting, and lo and behold, I received an offer to teach the class ‘Religion and Pop Culture.’ Praise the Lord! This course is a new offering for this campus so it will be a grassroots effort.
So far, I have committed to teach the class in two formats this fall. I will teach it both in a face to face regular classroom format as well as the internet blackboard format. This summer I will need to take a course to learn how to do an online blackboard course.
Of course, all this depends on student enrollment. If enough students sign up for it, it is a go; If not, I’ll have to wait until the following semester and hope enrollment rises.
This is what is crazy about this whole deal: Several months ago in a staff meeting Pastor Eric was talking about his desire to see The Village establish a presence on a college campus.
We discussed the idea and agreed it was one of his 20% (that is, a good idea). I expressed with the staff my desire to teach at Pima and the fact I was certified to teach, thinking this would be a good ‘in.’ But Pastor Rod, who knows a local pastor who teaches several courses at Pima, reminded us that it would be nearly impossible to get in to teach at Pima because there are so many people on the ‘stand by’ list to do so. So instead the staff talked about possibly asking a few Villagers to take a class together and establish a presence that way.
The lesson: God is in charge and gives us the longing of our souls!
So, that’s the story. Here are a few ways you can partner with me regarding my new Pima gig:
1. Pray for me as I write the class syllabus and prepare to go ‘professor boy’.
2. Pray for student enrollment for both the classroom and online class offerings.
3. Pray that I will be able to do the online training course this summer.
4. Take the class! It will meet Monday and Wednesdays from 4-5:15 pm at the Desert Vista campus.
Thanks for listening with your eyes and praying with your faith muscle! Pastor Jimmy |
