I had an interaction yesterday that really impacted me. I am writing about it to process it out and share it with you.

I took 3 of the boys to Catalina HS pool on Saturday afternoon. We saw a boy from Ansel's class and his brother who was in Austin's 4th grade class last year. They were there with their dad who I met for the first time at the pool.

The older boy had come over to our house a few times a year or so ago. I thought he wasn't a very good friend for Austin. He seemed sort of lost and leaning into gang behavior. I met his mom a few times, but she was always on the run. Their family also had 4 boys in it. I was secretly relieved that Austin and the boy had different teachers for 5th grade.

Well, as I started to talk to the boys father, he told me he had been around but had been living for himself. He said he had changed. I asked him what changed him. "I got a DUI and went to jail for 6 months," he said.

He proceeded to tell me about his time in jail. The whole story was so laced with God and His movement. It seemed really consistent to how God deals with us (or is it just me lately?) I was left in awe.

The man had been planning a move to another state when his year old DUI resurfaced. His response was, "I can't serve jail time, I am moving!" No, he wasn't. His 6 month sentence was lonely and long. He wasn't allowed to get a job. He had to feel the time pass. His wife didn't write him for 3 of the 6 months. He heard from her 2 weeks before he was released. He didn't know if his family was there for him or not.

He told me that he would leave his cell when the mail was scheduled to arrive. The pain was too great when he didn't get a letter. When he felt this pain he took a walk or worked out in the gym for hours everyday.

I asked him if he met God in jail. "Not really," he said, "I was not ready for what they were talking about." I understood. I appreciated his honesty.

There were other things he said that really struck me. Making new choices that aren't associated with past things--like drinking or eating or whatever your addiction bent is. He said he was so proud of the man he started to see in the mirror. I am proud, too.

I guess I was struck by several things: The power and influence a father has, the power of choice, the enslavement Satan attempts on ALL souls, the way I am quick to label and act in my own best interest.

Here I am, the believer, and I was so encouraged by his story! It spoke to me of truth and hope and real freedom--the painful freedom of soul that ONLY God brings--whether we know him or acknowledge him in it or not.

I told this man about the Village and our little party and invited his family over. They are currently meeting with a Jehovah's Witness lady for Bible studies.

I felt like I offered him a lot of Jesus in just listening and engaging in his story. I told him how it impacted me. He and his sons came by on their way home from Catalina and swam at our house. It felt natural and awkward at the same time. I pray for that family--but in a way I feel like they ministered to me!

I got a glimpse into the spiritual realm yesterday. Thank you, Jesus. It felt like I was in enemy territory and had a secret meeting at the Catalina HS pool, of all places. It was powerful for me and I hope you enjoyed it as well!!!
