My Generation - real fine art by keith

So, what is it going to take for me and my missing generation to be serious for a minute and make a decision? Where’s the Zen when I need it/them/her? I mean, for cryin’ out loud, it took me a good six minutes to figure out which end of this piece of paper to start at. That just has to be bigger than me and my petty issues – it’s got to have something to do with Dr. Spock and World War II and Peter, Paul & Mary. [Or more likely Frankie Avalon and Bob Hope] It’s time to get off the pot – or the weed, or whatever we’ve been on the last 20 years – and let the dying world know we’re right behind them.

It took us this long to master the art of self-deception; now it’s time to move on – to take our place among the virtual elite who have devoted themselves (body & soul) to the grand and vital task of shrouding their collective ulterior motives in a cloudy mist of deodorant – usually jasmine flavored.

But the first order of business must be accomplished before any further evolution of our cause; we must produce an icon… That’s a tough one. I mean, what forty-something of my generation could credibly utter a phrase like “We shall go to the moon!” or “I have a dream!” without being laughed out of the dayroom of 3rd floor west? And what makes our dilemma even tougher is the realization that the most effective icons are dead icons. Who in these last few successions of egocentric generations is willing to give it up to that degree, just so a whole bunch of other people can gain prestige and aplomb? Perhaps Dana Carvey could help us out here – I’d certainly sacrifice him to the development of a juicy legacy (and the “church lady” be damned). He probably will not feel terribly obliged to cooperate (who from my generation would feel obliged to do anything?) – but, hey, I can’t really think of any dead icons that went willingly anyway. A dead Dana Carvey may truly be a great man…..

Once Dana (or whoever) is on board and our generation has its icon, the next step – the coup de gras if you will – would obviously be to find a grand new cause of global significance that no one has truly and deeply thought of before. Like World Peace (but that’s too cliché – forget that one…). Or maybe ridding the planet Earth of its most devastating and mind-numbing scourge – rap music. Nah – forget that one too; never let it be said that we did not learn from our parents’ failure to destroy rock-n-roll. Heck, we could go to Mars – the heroes that die in that imminent fiasco would remain in the cosmic consciousness for centuries to come.

Fine. Mars it is. The dignity and legacy of my generation have been secured…

And don’t worry: it hasn’t escaped me that the human race can travel the solar system and worship Dana Carvey with victorious progressiveness and yet simultaneously find it more and more impossible to succeed in maintaining relationships, raising our kids right and being committed to anything we don’t see an end to… I’m thinking we’ve come to value “irony” too much. Or something. I can’t decide.
