I recently watched a movie that reminded me of the years I lived in the South(east) called The Blue Collar Comedy Tour. It features four comics from the South. Their names are Bill Engvall (... here's your sign), Larry the Cable Guy, Ron White and Jeff Foxworthy (You might be a redneck if ...).

Jeff Foxworthy reminded me of a few southern words -- that is words that are used in the South. One of them is the word mayonnaise. Yes mayonnaise is what they also put on their sam'wich bread but they also use it in this way. I'll give you an example of what I mean.

Chuck and Willie go out to the closest mall to them which was about 30 miles away to shop for some gifts for their wives. When they are getting within sight of the mall Chuck looks at Willie and says, "Mayonnaise alot of cars here in this here parking lot. You suppose there's an auto show 'round back."

Another one is the word aorta which is one of the heart muscles. Welllll, some people know that there but they also use it in this way when observing something that don't look right to them. "Aorta do somethin' about that grass at the ballpark. Them little-leaguers are gonna get hurt."

One of them I recall was the word initiate. You know, like making the first move and stuff. No, it has a different meaning there. Here's an example. A guy is describing to his buddy what he and his sweet pea had for dinner at Denny's last the other night. "... Initiate a few onion rings and some tater salad."

I have a few more that Mr. Webster can't even come up with a spelling for. If you have any, please add to the list. I'd sure 'preciate it.

I remembered two more this evening. I am not even sure on a true spelling on these so I'll translate what they mean in modern English.

Southern words:

1) yauntu - do you want to
example: "Hey Jim, me and Ernie was thinkin' bout gettin some grub at Denny's before we go huntin'. So uh, .. yauntu go wit us?

2) widjadidja - with you did you
example: "Hey Big Tom you didn't happen to bring your truck widjadidja?"

I've got a third one in my head but I'll have to research further an accurate spelling if not the correct spelling (if there is one, that is) of it. It translates into the modern English word alright. Like if you were using alright as a question. I'll give my rough draft here though with an example.

3) ayite
example:
Ellie: "We was thinkin bout goin down to the tractor pull Saturday. Yauntu?"
Charlie: "Ayite."
