Thoughts . . . “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven…” – Jesus in Luke 10:18 Before creation, the One True God existed eternally as a perfect community of Father, Son, and Spirit. Out of nothing, God made all that is, including creation, people, and spirit beings called angels, for His good pleasure and glory. One of the angels (a guardian cherub according to Ezekiel 28:14) became proud and desired to be exalted like God (Ezekiel 28:2; James 4:6-7). He, Satan or the Dragon (Scripture speaks of him with multiple names), amassed an army of 1/3 of the angels and declared war on God in heaven (II Peter 2:4; Revelation 9:1, 12:3-4). God then defeated His enemies and cast them out of heaven (Isaiah 14:11-23; Ezekiel 28:1-19). Their war against God then literally fell upon the earth where they attacked God’s image bearers, beginning with our parents Adam and Eve, whom the Dragon tempted with sin and the twisting of God’s Word (Genesis 3:1-24). Adam and Eve lost their battle with Satan by sinning against God, and judgments and curses were meted out in justice by God. But, a promise was made of one who would come to slay the Dragon (Jesus), though Jesus would suffer a great injury in their fight (Genesis 3:14-15). This promise was fulfilled at the cross as Jesus took upon Himself the sins of His people and in so doing defeated sin, death, and the Dragon (Colossians 2:13-15).
