Happy New Year. I didn’t make any resolutions this year because I have hardly ever kept any of them anyway and they just caused me to be ashamed and feel like a failure. Shame and failure are not very conducive to having a happy anything, let alone a whole year of happiness. So instead this year I plan on listening to the Holy Spirit as it speaks through my community and directs me. I want to learn to be more obedient and, as Eric said in his message last Sunday, more humble. I suspect the way to happiness is through obedience and humility and I’d like to travel some distance down that road this year. Does that sound like a resolution? Not really. It is more of a longing. New Year’s longings are good. The longing to walk in the joy that comes from being obedient is high on my list. The longing to be free of sin patterns that have intwined me for far too long is also high on my list of New Year’s longings. The nice thing about New Year’s longings is that you can’t really fail at them. You can be disappointed, but you can’t really fail. So what are you longing for in 2005?
