The Village: 2004/4/12 O.K. Hopefully, if you are reading this postcard you made it to the prayer time on Tuesday evening. If you are reading it in e-mail form, then you are probably thinking about what you will be fasting this evening and tomorrow, or if you are going to fast at all. Either way, I thought I’d give you a few guidelines and things to think about in regards to fasting. “Even now, declares the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity” (Joel 2:12-13). “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sins and heal their land” (II Chronicles 7:14). The purpose of prayer and fasting is to bring our minds and hearts to a place of focus on God. True fasting will draw us closer to God and His purposes. Fasting brings a sharp focus to the dramatic difference between our physical and spiritual natures. When we deny our physical nature for the purpose of calling on God to do supernatural things, we should find ourselves closer to God’s heart, better able to hear his voice, and comforted in our place as children in his kingdom. A big part of fasting and prayer is the confession of sin. You should begin your fast this evening by spending some time examining your life and considering where sin has a stronghold in it, then spending some time in confession. Also, spend some time asking God to provide a building for us to gather in. -Pastor E (according to Karen B)
