The Village: March 1, 2007
In the beginning . . .
This year’s Easter theme is “Rebuilding the Ancient Ruins.” Christ’s resurrection from the dead was the beginning of the end of Satan’s rule. You and I (Glorious ruins) now have the opportunity to become like Christ – to see the Kingdom of God ushered in. Humanity was on a journey away from God, away from the Garden of Eden, and away from being human – but Christ has given us the opportunity to change our directional facing. Humanity, can now face God, face the Garden (the beginning), and have our humanness restored by Christ. This month we will be preparing to celebrate the resurrection, and we want to invite our friends and the community surrounding the Lutheran church to join us.
Easter, historically, at The Village has always been different and experimental. It has also required the participation of many. Last year, our Easter celebration was a progressive-self-guided-experience. People wrote parables, made food, painted pictures, and showed video parables. The self-guided aspects of last year’s celebration were difficult for some to connect to – while others enjoyed wandering around eating, reading, and breathing in the self-guided experience. Considering these experiences, this year we want to offer both a guided experience and the opportunity to touch and wander around and experience different kinesthetic engagements. Hopefully this will help those who visit us feel comfortable and not lost and frustrated.
During the Village Drumming Circle we discussed the different things that we could do during the Easter Celebration. You can reference the notes on the website to read the complete list. There are a couple of things that will happen – we will be serving stew, we will be sending out invitations to about 2000 people in the surrounding neighborhood, we will be praying through the neighborhoods surrounding the church, and there will be music. Cheryl, Ginger, and Adrienne have offered to help me coordinate everyone’s participation. The leadership is going on a retreat this weekend, but next week – I going to begin putting meat on the different ideas that where generated by you guys at the drumming circle – so you should expect to get a phone call from Cheryl, Ginger, or Adrienne in the next few weeks.
March’s Events
March 10 – First Prayer walk through the neighborhood. These prayer walks were part of our identity in the past, but I suspect many of you have not participated in one before. Don’t worry, you will not have to talk to anyone on this prayer walk unless someone stops you and asks what you are doing. The simple philosophy of these walks is to do spiritual battle for the neighborhoods surrounding the church. Fighting for people spiritually is the first step in rebuilding the ruins of our world. When we announce the presence of the Kingdom of God, we are telling Satan that he is not in charge in a particular space. We are literally reminding him of Christ’s resurrection. We will go out in twos and threes, stopping at houses to pray for the inhabitants and their next-door-neighbors. I encourage you to bring your children. I’m going to write a short prayer that my daughter can memorize and pray with us over the houses that we stop at.
(The prayer walk will start at 10:30. We will meet at the Lutheran Church, and eat together after we are done praying.)
March 17 – Camping Trip – Adrienne Crawford is sponsoring a camping trip. There will be sign-up sheet at church if you are interested, or you can contact Adrienne for more info.
March 24 – Second Prayer walk through the neighborhood – The difference between this prayer walk and the first will be the door hangers. When praying for the different houses, we will hang a door hanger describing the village with a place for people to ask for prayer. (The prayer walk will start at 10:30. We will meet at the Lutheran Church, and eat together after we are done praying.)
March 31 – Julie Brunson’s 40th birthday
Yeah – Keith is throwing a big bash for Julie. If you would like to help him, please give him a call.
