One of the most amazing things you can do in your life is attend ‘broader’ church events. This past week I spent time in Grand Rapids, Michigan serving on the Board of Directors of the Home Missions department of the Christian Reformed Church. Multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and drawn from all across Canada and the US, these sixteen people sat and prayed and loved and wept and called the church to the mission of loving and pursuing the north American culture where we live. I felt the glow of the Holy Spirit when I sat in the room and talked about how to spend millions of dollars and where to distribute the wonderful resources God has given his church. Then, on Sunday, I got to hear Eric talk about the gifts of the Holy Spirit being in us and through us and for the mutual benefit of the church. And I felt that same warm glow of the Spirit in the conversations we had during and after the time of worship. More than any time in my life, I have come to appreciate that the church is not confined to time and space and is much bigger and much smaller than I can imagine. It is found in the
spending of millions to start and fund new churches from a room in Grand Rapids and it is found in posing in a posture of prayer by the Sinner’s Chair for Emily Lewis after Vespers as she sketches my portrait, and while posing begin to pray and see and sense and taste and touch the Spirit so alive in the ones gathered in the Village. God is really big and really small. I hope you are getting to know him both ways. Rod
