One of the things that Eric and I have been reflecting on since our trip to San Diego is the beautiful necessity of promoting metaphors that we can all agree reflect the ‘picture’ of the Village. A metaphor is simply using a word or image normally reserved for one thing and making it apply to another. For the last little while, we have been calling the Village a bus stop. A place where people get off or on the bus and interact for a while before moving on. Before that we have heard people refer to us as a hospital - a place where the sick and hurting are brought to health. Sometimes we hear ourselves referred to as a MASH unit where we fix people up in order to return them to the battle. All metaphors eventually fall apart, but they are often useful to help us make sense of reality. I’ve been wrestling with the idea that the Village is a band of desert survivalists who are interdependent and trying to find their way together. Even our name, the Village, is a metaphor for our view of what our community looks like. So what are the metaphors you think of when you try to describe the Village? Share them with us.
