Hey Everyone,

I'm posting this plan for Kid Vespers (K-4th grade) that will take us through the next 5 weeks. I have the stories picked out but anyone (not just people doing Kid Vespers) can jump in with activity ideas that more (or less) go along with the topic. Parents can refer back to this list when wondering what to do for their turn.

We are going to go through some stories about the miracles of Jesus. Chris already started this last week with the healing of Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52). He blindfolded the kids before they started the story so they could experience it as a blind person would. When the part in the story came where Jesus healed Bartimeaus, they took off the blindfolds and finished the story. What a great idea, Chris! I heard from my kids that they played other fun blindfold games too. It's nice when the weather permits activities like this instead of always feeling like we have to come up with a craft.

So here is the list - and don't forget, anyone can chime in with ideas for crafts, games, illustrations, songs, coloring pages, etc that can help the kids flesh out the stories.

June 8 ARCH BOOK --- "HE REMEMBERED TO SAY THANK-YOU" Luke 17:11-19 This is when Jesus healed 10 lepers and only one (a Samaritan!) remembered to come back and thank Jesus for it. The story is about lots of things (ungratefulness, good hearts in supposedly "bad" people, etc.) it would be good for the series to bring up to the kids that this story shows that Jesus has power over disease in our bodies. There is another story that can be used in the same lesson: "The Man Who Took 7 Baths". This is when God heals Namaan of leprosy in the Old Testament. Namaan has to go through God's prophet (in Samaria, by the way...) to find healing.

June 15 ARCH BOOK --- "THE BOY WHO GAVE HIS LUNCH AWAY" John 6:1-15 The story of Jesus multiplying the lunch of one small boy to feed thousands. For the sake of the series...this shows Jesus power over matter...stuff. But feel free to bring out any aspect of this story that you want...Jesus giving thanks, the people starting to believe because of seeing this miracle, the faith of the young boy to be willing to offer so little for such a big task, etc. This is Father's Day, by the way.

June 22 ARCH BOOK--- "THE LITTLE BOAT THAT ALMOST SANK" Matthew 14:22-33 & Mark 6:45-51 Jesus is now displaying his power over the weather (and making several other points along the way...) Humans have figured out a lot in the area of healing and fixing the human body over the last 2000 years. But we are still very humbled by the weather. We can kinda see where the weather is going but we are poweless to change anything about it - other than getting out of the way! It's nice to remember how easily Jesus handles the weather. I also like how the story goes that Jesus is not with them when the storm is first raging. This brings in the complexity of how we often think its time for God to do something about the weather but his plan is not always to rush in and stop hard things from happening. The back of this book gives a good little "sermon" about that in the "Dear Parents" part. I don't always find anything useful back there but this one had some good stuff.

June 29 ARCH BOOK ----- "THE LITTLE SLEEPING BEAUTY" Luke 8:40-42, 49-56 This is the story of the little girl who died while her father was trying to get Jesus to come and heal her. Jesus came and brought her back to life. Death is not "too much" for God. He is the boss of it. So why does God let death happen at all? When the first humans brought sin to the human race, God knew it wouldn't be good to let them live forever that way, so He made it that humans would die after a while. However, God is still the boss of life and death.

JULY 6 ARCH BOOK ----- "THE GREAT SURPRISE" Luke 19:2-10 This is the story of Zacchaeus. I put it in as a wrap-up of the discussion of the miracles that Jesus did while he was on earth because despite the flashy show of power over nature, the story of how unconditional love changes a selfish heart to a loving heart is the biggest miracle of all. The kids did the story of Zacchaeus sometime ago but the point that was brought out was more about how Jesus loved the even the people that seemed to be big jerks.

So this is the line-up. I'll try to post activity ideas later.
