God Walks
By Derek Hugen, 2-27-04

God of desert walks
The sand
Alone with me

In my sunstroke I vomit on his sandals of which I am unworthy to tie
I wipe them with my broken hair
(like sarcasm nailed to a crossbeam)

The God of the coffee shop mirage takes
Regional with too much cream
He scatters my papers disappears my table
Until I shatter like ceramic cups

Distant supermarket horizons
The wild God
smiling like death and skipping

On silver tiles
I drop naked and afraid
Into my own delusion

I am stagnant gray
Drips of blood from my fingertips
Streak across the right side of my head
Flung like paint against a canvas

In the desert I have nothing to offer
Tell storm shut up
Tell lame man stand up
Tell blind man see
Suffer again tomorrow

(Today the bridegroom walks)

I scream still silent echo
Reverberate dumb vocal chords

In the blue oasis of illusion the ancient sharks shadow the deep red
Ocean within ocean black sea
Covering the earth with flood

Wineskins crack with sand
Seep water into deep soil swallowing glutton

Then no white horses
Desert lingers beauty
Long rocks and deep roots
Wait for storm clouds gather

Suffering will have its tomorrow

(Today the bridegroom walks)

I often wait a few days after you post to read what you have written, because I know it most often is going to hurt . . . hurt in a good way.
I love the opening to this poem:
God of desert walks
the sand
alone with me

In my sunstroke I vomit at his sandals of which I am unworthy to tie
I wipe them with my broken hair
(I am sarcasm nailed to a crossbeam)

Hmm, so very desriptive of my desert experiences with Jesus.

The last two line really struck me. They taste so sweet.

Suffering will have its tomorrow

(Today the bridegroom walks)

Eric
