Carrying Crosses Using the Buddy System by Derek Hugen, 6-20-04 Your cross was warped, ran down your body like loose paint, mixing your wine-blood with vats of primary-mixed mud water. So it mad sense that I was crooked. That it took a kilogram of drugs to balance my leavened head to walk in that not-quite-straight path up Golgotha's broken shell, heaving breath and trees on my back. & I could feel it in my sides even before they stabbed you with long poles and Indian-heads like the ones we found in the desert when we were young. When sand monasteries broke out between sequoias and burning bushes. God was close then. Even the back pews were alive and sang old hymns. Now as we grow, he seems to hide in foreign nations & we don't see him in the flames and whispers as often. I see him in you, though. I see him in what you say to me. Like sometimes community sits in for His presence or knows the shape of His face so clearly it molds Him into our own clay heads. We are so closely kin, you and I, I cannot help but carry another cross.
