D James Kennedy perhaps gets a little carried away with his evangelistic hopes for this movie but I tho't you'd be interested in what he has to say about THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. Someone's put together a website for those interested in reaching out to the community using this movie as a tool. (See below for the link.) I'm sorry, maybe I'm too cynical; maybe Kennedy is right to be excited and hopeful.
In case you haven't heard, Mel Gibson is considering putting in a closing statement at the end that takes away some of the anti-Semitic tone that's been attributed to the film by the media. It's something like, "Over 250,000 Jews were crucified under the 1st century Romans, but only one rose from the dead," but don't quote me.
I predict we'll organize a group of Village People to go see this flick on the 28th.

Dear Dennis,

I want to take a moment to share my thoughts with you about
Mel Gibson's new movie, "The Passion of the Christ," which
opens nationally on February 25.

"The Passion of the Christ" is the most intense and moving
film I have ever seen. I have no doubt that many lives will
be changed as a result of seeing it.

I cannot recall a movie in my lifetime that has precipitated
greater anticipation or created more of a stir than this film.

Unlike some, I find listening to the discussions and debate
surrounding it exciting, because I believe "The Passion of
the Christ" has the potential to stir a mighty rebirth of
spirituality that I pray will sweep over our nation and
the world!

+ +Coming to a theatre near you: The Salvation Message.

This movie, unlike any other, focuses on the last twelve hours of Christ's life. It's a gritty and truly realistic account of the crucifixion that will both disturb and captivate you.

Without question, seeing this movie will bring a deeper meaning and appreciation for what Christ did for you and me on Calvary. In what I can only describe as groundbreaking, "The Passion of the Christ" takes the crucifixion story and truly brings it to life in excruciating detail... and therein lays the passion of this movie.

Dennis, that is why I am writing you today. I believe
we've been given a special gift with this movie--a powerful
resource that can be used to transform our fallen society
and ultimately redirect a culture that has lost its moral
compass.

But it will only happen if the faith-filled believers of
our nation embrace this film and make it their own.

That is why I am urging everyone in our online family to
promote this film and use it creatively as a dynamic
outreach tool to evangelize our neighborhoods, communities,
and our nation.

Look at what is already happening:

++ In Texas, a man purchased 60,000 tickets that he is giving away as part of his personal outreach!

++Churches across the nation are ordering enough tickets to fill entire theatres, as part of community outreach.

Please take a few moments to visit this special site and see how you and your church can use this film to propel the kingdom of Christ to new heights in our nation and beyond:

These kinds of opportunities are rare, which is why I am asking you to take action today--with your family, friends, church leaders and anyone who needs to hear the salvation message.

Thank you for taking action.

D. James Kennedy, Ph.D., Founder
CENTER FOR RECLAIMING AMERICA

P.S. Please visit our website for exciting ways that you can
promote this groundbreaking film. Together, let's work at
making February 25th, the premier of this film, the day of
America's spiritual rebirth!

o.k., don't get me wrong, i'm going to see the movie, but I don't think its the great missional answer that the church has been waiting for and we should embrace it as "our own." Will it change lives. Yes. The story of Christ death is a powerfull one and should be told, but I think the church should treat it like any other movie. What happens if I don't like the movie. Will I be branded a heretic and banished from the church.

Eric

I'll more than likely go see the show, but with reservations. I hear that it's rated R due to the violence shown in it. I'm not convinced that people will find Jesus to be a compelling person to reshape their life because they sit and see Him being beaten to a pulp. That strikes me as more showtime than Gospel. If the reaction it gets is some 9th grade boys sitting there saying "cool" when they pierce the Lord, then I think there's a problem in the delivery of the message of grace. I'll go because I believe the Christian community should step into supporting these counter-cultural uses of the mass media which may draw some to Christ. I went to see Luther for the same reason. However, what I have heard in the promos of Passion make me suspicious that one of the considerations in putting together the screen play was similar to the nightly news; that is 'if it bleeds, it leads.' I hope I'm wrong and that it's much more than that.
