I wanted to share a little story with you all because it really made me think of you lovely people of the Village.
last week our small team went to a girls home. 17 of the 31 girls there have some kind of mental handicap - some more serious than others. the girls are all in their 20's. it was both a very heavy and lighthearted situation to be in - the girls were amazing and full of love for us, but their situation is definitely not ideal as they are short of staff members to give them proper treatment and their living situation is definitely not ideal.
the last day that we were there we brought watercolors and painted with them. it was SO BEAUTIFUL to do this with them. I wish you all could have been there to see it. particularly one woman, who has pretty bad epilepsy, was an absolutely amazing painter. she sat at her paper so incredibly meticulously, being very thoughtful as to what she wanted to paint next and where and how. the day before her epilepsy was so bad that she had fallen flat on the ground twice, so her face had a bad black eye and scratches on it. we even took her to the hospital because of how bad her seizures were that day.
I just sat there and watched her paint for a good while. here is this woman, pretty much with nowhere else to go, she is very sick, is looked down upon by most people around her because of her condition, and yet she created this absolutely beautiful and incredible painting.
it just reminded me of the village because of how it was there that I was introduced to the concept that women are made to create beauty and to make things that are otherwise ugly into something worthwhile, and I saw that in action in this woman. so cool. :) |
