The state is having a lot of Budget cuts and DES is being deeply effected. If you are a praying person, I would ask you to pray for CPS staff and the families we work with. I meet with my staff today at 1:30. We have to take mandatory work furlough which means one day no pay each pay period. It will be about $400 a month out of my pay not counting the pay cuts that are also happening. Please pray for me as well as my budget is tight but there is always room to tighten. Layoffs might come. And cuts in services to families are happening all over. Many of my people are going to be reassigned. I just ask for prayer during this time for many people and families who will be affected.

...it's also good to write/call legislators and tell them, for example, let's slow or even halt the I-10 widening if it means sending our CPS workers out to check on kids in danger.

We're already out of necessities like hand soap at my middle school(and it's gonna get much worse here) but at least I'm going to get paid to come to work every day. Looking at a 10 percent pay cut next year, though.

We'll pray about your financial situation.

Of course, that would put my son, Justin, out of work since he is the quality control guy checking the quality of the concrete used to build the bridges forming the freeway overpasses in Tucson. So, uhmm, I have to choose between my 'daughter' or my son being employed... :)

By the way, I think it is a Federal highway project so the state legislature probably doesn't have power to stop it in such a way that we would be able to divert the money, anyway. Economics is a tough subject. I am here in Grand Rapids cutting $2,967,000.00 dollars out of a nine million dollar budget. Real people are going to feel the very real consequences of others not being able to be as generous as they have in the past. Pray for church planters and pastors who are going to take severe cuts in the money that we had hoped to send them in the next year. Unless the overall economy turns around, there will be lots more pain.

You are right that it is always about choices. But those choices always affect real people in painful ways. That said, I'll continue to pray for my kids. All of them.

Rod
