What does it mean to love your enemy? I have been wrestling with that as of late. What does it mean to love the one that was so out to destroy you and attack you? What does it mean to turn the other cheek? I have been wrestling with it because I have been wrestling with my story and redemption. My parents have refused to acknowledge anything of my story and for my wellbeing I separated. And God has given me a very good new family. And I have kind of acted like my parents were dead, but they are not. I saw a picture of them on facebook tonight and I was stunned at just how old they looked, how aged they appeared. They will die eventually like us all, and I would want them to know and have the love that I have with God. I would want them to have redemption and healing. I think Rod told me about this a long time ago about having an open door of hope, but my hard headedness was not listening very well. The least I can do is pray for them regularly and hope for them. There were strings of hope in my childhood that they did give me. I could have been a lot worse off here. God can work with anything and He can work with those strands of light. I do not know exactly how to love my parents, but perhaps that is a start.

Cheryl, thanks for writing in. I can't tell you how to love your enemy, because I know that I am really bad at it and all I can do is ask God to change that in me. But I do know how tough it is to have any kind of hope for your family, and I will be praying that the Spirit will come to you and help you to hope when you need it.

I also just want to offer to you how much my own parents have changed since I became Christian. I know that they definitely aren't coming from the same starting point that yours are, and they are certainly not perfect now by any means, but God has done so many things in their lives and in our relationships that I am just totally amazed when I look back over the last three and a half years and compare what they used to be like when I was a kid with where they are now. I know that this is not any kind of proof, and God has different intentions for each family, but I just thought I would offer up my own testimony as a potential source of hope that God can change the hearts even of people who don't believe in Him or follow His way.

Thanks Kelsea, I know that is true of many many of us that we are molded by God even when we are not necessarily walking with Him. I have seen that in my work often. Thanks for the thoughts.
