Got the annual Birthday Card today;
It comes every year without fail.
I opened it this time;
Have not done that for years.
It changed from those years ago when it was sent;
Simple words an appearance that it too would be trashed.
It came from those who birthed me.
Parents that I have long left behind;
I was reminded, “You have no idea what they have gone through.”
I have no idea what anyone has gone through these last eight years;
No clue the struggle, damage, sacrifices
That was made for me to be sitting here.
This community and house that surrounded me
When I had nothing and life was so dark. . . .
These people who raised me next to the people who birthed me.
It was not all bad; it was not all a horrible nightmare.
Nothing seems black and white right now;
I cannot find the right or wrong.
Every action, every word has a consequence;
I pray that I will not make the wrong move,
And yet there is just freedom;
Maturity comes with insight and clarity;
It comes with responsibility and expectations.
I love this community and pray I will always be surrounded by it,
But I love these people that birthed me as well.
What we do with foster children seems so unclear now.
I do not know the answers;
I am extremely ungrateful;
I am extraordinarily selfish;
I am completely fallen.
More and more I realize that I need God more than ever;
More and more I come to see how wretched I am.
I made a call tonight to reassure my family.
I would have never made it before today;
It would have destroyed me years ago.
Now, I am just sad.
Sad for those who have not been as fortunate as I;
Sad for those who are still in the darkness;
Sad that I cannot do anything about it.
Hopeful that He will bring good out of all evil.

Subject: Birthday Present

I got the best birthday present ever; my sister agreeing that I should not have a relationship with my parents and they should not have a relationship with me. She said she has stepped away a lot as well. This was amazing change over the last eight years with my sister. Praise God.

Subject: encouraging

Cheryl - thanks for sharing your pain about your family and birthday. It's good to hear what's happening with that part of your story, even as God is still grieving with you.
But I'm glad you got to talk with your sister and that she has acknowledged things.
