I've been lying in bed for the past hour with the random thoughts one has after being sick for a couple of days. Enough molecular movement to inflate a small balloon, but thanks to the apparently hardy weight of my skull I haven't noticed any changes. Pressure isn't all bad. These haven't been the same kinds of thoughts as if I were on Nyquil, which I normally would be; the little person now kicking around in my belly has stopped all that. Nyquil thoughts are more interesting but certainly not easily articulated once the sun rises -- like a very profound dream which answers all the questions of life in one simple sentence. But if you managed to write it down in the middle of the night it turns out otherwise.
Eric asked us to blog the mundane elements of our daily lives, so here goes: Ashton's been sick for precisely one month now. The majority of whatever she has seems to be viral, although they put her on antibiotics a while back for an ear infection. Her cough gets so bad in the middle of the night that we move her into our room on a little makeshift bed on the floor, after which she magically ceases to cough and sleeps like a little angel. If I didn't know better, I'd think she was making it up.
Not that making it up would be all bad. I remember one time when I fell asleep in the car as a child and then tried hard to pretend that I was still asleep once we got home so my dad would carry me in from the car (the sleepy ride home was the best part of having lots of evening church events). He picked me up and teasingly asked if I was playing possum. I tried hard to say "no", but instead popped out with a "yes", and he set me down to waddle into the house on my own two feet.
I've so far removed 45 of my who-knows-how-many dreads as the result of a conversation I had with Eric a few weeks ago (and, I later realized, a prayer I had prayed that morning) where I discovered that though they had been an adventure into freedom at the start, they had quickly turned into a safe hiding place from dealing with my true identity, parts of which have been effectively shut down for a while now. So out they come, 8 months later, fortunately not so long that I have to shave my head; I don't like having short hair, and I'm sure I'd like baldness even less (no offense, Joel). There's definitely some relief mixed in here, since maintaining dreads with naturally frizzy hair is no easy task. My hair was also getting Very Heavy when I washed it. Anyway, thanks to everyone who helped me into the adventure and also to those who are graciously helping me out of it.
I have more thoughts, but I think I'll let them cook a while and see what becomes of them.
