Lent
And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. (Hebrews 1:2, 3 NLT)
The 2012 Lenten season begins with Ash Wednesday on February 22. I have been looking forward to Lent for a very long time. Over the past three years, God has used the practice of Lent to help center me on Jesus and to add needed disciplines to my life. During this year's Lenten season, the Village will focus on the call to discipleship, which is idoneous (word of the day, January 31: "apt, fitting, corresponding") with the historical purposes of Lent: to consider Jesus' crucifixion and grow in the taking up of His cross. In observance of Lent last year, Sue and I memorized and reviewed Scripture, fasted television, and woke up early in the mornings to pray together. This had a profound impact on our relationship with each other and with God. This year we plan to do the same and cut out evening snacking. Our hope is that some of these disciplines will carry over into our lives after Lent and that we will learn how to rely on Jesus as the "sustainer of everything".
