Guess what - I'm going to go to school.
A couple of weeks ago I went to the Pima College office on the base and filled out an application for enrollment. They sent me home with their web-address so I could practice at home and take the sample assessment test.
This past Monday I took the actual test at the DM Pima office. During the math portion I was interrupted by a short power outage and had to retake that part. For some reason it seemed harder the second time around. All the questions were different. At last the computer had enough and quit asking me questions.
The results? Well, as for the math, I took the pre-algebra version of the test and scored 48 points out of a possible 99. In both reading and writing I scored 99. That made me feel really (really really really really) good. :)
I knew I would need extra classes to bring up my math skills. I think I want to start with math anyway, because it's my least favorite and I don't want to drag it out.
Next step is to actually enroll in said math course. Just in case it isn't obvious: I'm excited! A little scared, too. I've never been to school here in the States, and not anywhere else in a couple of dacades. After so many years here (fourteen years now) there are still "opportunities" for me to experience culture shock...

Good luck, have fun, and there are lots of potential math tutors around if you ever feel stuck. ;-)

Yeah, I should blog out what I mentioned briefly on Sunday. Anyway, I'm schooling in fall. Others is schooling too. So . . . A few semesters back a few of us met after church at my house to help each other study (and for teachers, grade homework) as well as to be alternatively entertained/annoyed by my cat Blaise. Anyway, it really helped me to get through my math class, and Susan and Cheryl were brilliant with explaning math to me. So, hopefully, we can offer something like that to you as well. I'll commit to it, though I probably won't have much homework to do (mostly digital art classes, i.e., staring at a computer screen). Is this something that would interest other students or teachers? If so, when, where, how, why? What subjects? What level? We have a while before the semester starts, so nothing needs to be finalized yet.

okay, so now I am officially enrolled at Pima College. On August 24th at 8:40 in the morning I take my first math class. Pre-algebra. Pima offers over eighty pre-algebra classes this fall! I guess I don't have to believe that I'm the only math-deficient adult. Yay!

Count me in! I can help folks do math (ritmatik, prealg, alg, intemediate alg, college alg). I consider it pure joy! Also grading in the company of others would be fun, less lonely. When? Due to too many work hours ;( just at night, except Fri-Sun, when I can join the math group almost anytime. :)

Yesterday Chris took Timmy on a little outing. They went to the DM Pima office to pay for my class and then to the book store at the east campus. He came home with three pounds worth of book and study guide.

It's not like I haven't realized what exactly it is that I'm getting ready to do. It's just that now I have tangible proof - there's a book in my house and in six months time I will understand these now very mysterious looking equations. (At least that's what I tell myself to fight the scary feeling...)

SuKay approached me with the question of timing for a math study group. Some Monday evenings, Tuesday evenings, most Wednesday evenings, not too early Thursday evenings, and Saturday afternoons/evenings are options. Friday mornings/days are an option, too. I could have my kids do their weekly homework at that time. It would be healthy for them to see a bunch of adults do homework.
Derek: I'm not so sure about Sunday nights after Vespers. That alarm rings awfully early on Monday mornings. But I'm not totally excluding it. Where? My house - your house - someone else's house - library - duncan donuts - ...

Okay I now break this week of silence on the subject of "math support group." I guess we'll just wait and see when school starts, where and when to meet.

Saturday nights work for me at either Dunkin Donuts or Coffee X Change. Mike used to meet me at Dunkin Donuts for math tutoring.

The International House of P4NC4KES is another place that's open 24 hours. Rod and I recently met there at 4:30am, but not really about math stuff except maybe my problem of remembering only n - 1 things in a list of n things.

I would also be interested in joint study/homework times. I'm pretty flexible about time, but will probably need a place with wireless Internet, as I suspect most of my homework will be online.

Yeah, I might even be able to come sometimes (depends on when y'all get together) and if people don't need help figuring out the hypotenuse of the triangle then I'll just assess my six graders' writing.

Hmm.... which is reminding me that I have an idea to try. Will post it as a separate blog.

Mmmmm . . . Dunkin Donuts. Sorry I have been absent from these conversations. My computer is having problems with its wireless. I foolheartedly changed msconfig to a selective startup and it's given me problems ever since. I'm on my dad's laptop right now. Anyway, offhand, it looks like Saturday evenings would be the best time (I may do work in Phoenix on Thur & Fri, and classes are Mon & Wed so those aren't good for me). Would that be suitable to all? Anyone who wants to attend, but can't do Saturday, raise your hand. I figure the more overburdened amung us can show up early (5-7pm), stretching out for those whose medications doesn't seem to kick in until 3 or 4 in the morning, which is to say, whenever we are finished. That makes Dunkin decent because it's open 24, and we don't have to worry about the host jogging off to bed early (say, at midnight). All of these, of course, are merely strawmen to the true calling of donuts and coffee. Unfortunely, there is not a wireless internet connection, which is bad for Russ. If there is another place open late with space for everyone, I'm open to suggestions. So . . .

-Grading is good. For Susan's work last year we all helped her with grading when we could. I don't know how that works at the college level, but we can at least check papers against a key. Maybe.

-Karen, for the chapbook dealie, the main steps are to collect writings/artwork, type/scan it into the computer, and edit/format it into book form. I'll try to get you formating specs at writers group. Yeah, wrong blog, but I'm not typing another.

Summary- Would Saturday evening at Dunkin Donuts (Grant & Swan or 22 and Craycroft?) work for everybody? Other suggestions?

Coffee XChange on Grant/Campbell is open 24-7. But maybe you're thinking there will be space issues there? We can always warm the staff up to our being there hours on end by tipping generously.

But (back to Derek's plan A) which Dunkin Donuts has more, um, ambiance?

dunkin donuts was actually not that much of a serious suggestion, but the ambiente there consists of sugar fumes mixed with coffee fumes. I hear it's suitable for staying awake.

Actually since Susan and I just heard that we are approved on our apartment, we would like to offer our place. Yes Russ, free wifi. I'll eventually have a computer set up for anyone to use anytime. We'll try and get enough seating.

We get the keys september first so maybe a couple of days and we'll be ready to have people come to our disaster zone. Upsides are free, open late, wifi, free.

BYO camping chair, people. And since it's Benji's place, BYO coffee! I can bring my new French press from Ikea on the nights I come ;-) (Or wait-maybe Susan has a coffeemaker...? Can't remember if you drink it or not, girl)

Actually she does not drink coffee, but surprisingly we, we do have a coffee maker. The plan is to upgrade this in the near future and keep coffee paraphanalia around our apartment. I don't know what all to get so my plan is to get a coffee drinker to come with me to the store and we'll buy stuff.

We will have tea and some form of cold drinks.
