Today I spent quite a bit of time painting a closet which gave me opportunity to spend some alone time with God, I guess you could say I literally was in my prayer closet. One of the things that came to mind during that time were Eric’s words from Vespers last night. In particular, I reheard the part about knowing who you are and asking for help in moving forward in offering those parts of yourself.

Lately there are those in my close community that have been telling me that I am an encourager. This is hard for me to believe. They are hearing and seeing things that I don’t hear or see in myself. Life experience tells me that they know the truth and that I need to trust my community. So here’s what I’m asking from all of you, help me to grow in offering encouragement. The Holy Spirit is definitely disrupting my life by calling me out into this arena and you are invited to walk with me on the journey.

I doubt I would have become a pastor of the Village without your encouragement. I remember sitting in your family room pouring out my pain to you and Tom and how you listened and wept and I particularly remember driving away from your house thinking that maybe I would give this path a bit more time. I remember the January when you guys wanted to meet with me and we went for lunch and I assumed you were going to tell me that it was all over and instead you told me that you were sorry you had not been as fully vested in ministry with me as you could be and that you were resolved to continue walking with me. I walked away from that meeting on a cloud. I think encouragement couples well with your pastoring gift. You care deeply for people, have honored your parents well, opened your home to strangers and friends and all of us are encouraged to be more selfless by your example. True encouragement, I think, is deeds, not words. Your deeds betray whatever false beliefs you have about your gift of encouragement.
