On the hike in, we stumbled upon a small meadow and two unsuspecting elk -- one male and one female. The buck yelled at us and then they both ambled into the forest.

Chris was cold. Very cold.
Four wild turkeys crossed the road in front of us on the way out of Big Lake. During this trip, we saw these turkeys plus four elk, two deer, countless squirrels, two horny toads, a rabbit, two owls (or one owl twice?), a couple of chipmunks and various beautiful birds. We heard many more elk making their calls from distant ridges. There were also some bear and elk footprints in the mud by our camp!
