My custodian coworker is searching for an affordable one to take to Mexico to use for his daughter's quinceanera (15th bday party). He's discouraged to see that the cheapest ones in Best Buy are $400 and up. I told him to look on Craig's List (etc) but he doesn't have Internet (of course not). Ideas about how to find good used LCD projectors, anyone? I suggested that he try to rent one in Hermosillo, but of course he's not actually living in Hermosillo, which makes setting that up more difficult.

Glad to see that Layne got help with the green laser....I don't even know what that is. Except for in a "Star Wars" movie.

Although not used you can find cheaper projectors.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=projector&show=dd&cid=2255774066529792332&ei=e3SZTPSdE5PijASNnb2bCw&sa=title&ved=0CEUQ8wIwBDgK#p

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=projector&show=dd&cid=1620626660021237529#

They run about $170, but being small cheap projectors they arn't very bright. You would need a dark room with no lights on. A decent over $400 projector will shine at over 2000 lumens letting you use it in a dim room (daytime inside with only indirect light). Theses cheaper ones only output at about 12 lumens. So for thought comparison think cheap led flashlight vs. flood lamp.

It's do-able but not exciting.

At about $210 here is a digital camera with cheap projector built in.

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-S1000pj-Projector-Vibration-Reduction/dp/B002KANWQ2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1285125849&sr=1-1

A quick check of Craigslist shows a price range of $300-$400 for full sized projectors.

Hope that helps

Could you ask him what part of Mexico- if's near Nogales or the Rancho Betania (remember we went there???) he might be able to borrow one from my in-laws.
If he only wants it for that one event, it would be better to borrow, right?

Wow--thanks for your help, Benji and Adrienne.

The event is (I think) near Hermosillo...I don't know enough about the geography to know if that's considered "close."

Adrienne, could you ask David's folks if they'd really be OK with that, before I bring it up with Ismael (the custodian)? Because I don't want to offer that to him without knowing they're comfortable loaning out a $$ piece of equipment to a total stranger. Albeit a regular, background-checked employee of my school ;-)

I am waiting to hear back from David's parents- do you know when the quinceanera is? Hermosillo is about 30 min south of Rancho Betania- so it could work- I will let you know as soon as I hear.

Adrienne, I found out that my coworker is actually from Granados, basically the other end of Sonora--south of Agua Prieta, so that won't work.

Benji, I printed out the info about those two projectors to give to him. The event will be at nighttime, so they can do the slide show in a dark room. He's quite happy to look into buying an affordable one to have for later, rather than paying to rent one.

Thanks for your speedy responses. I understand why Layne posts "random" requests for help ;-)

Ok- I will just mention: I did talk to Guy and they have one at the house in Nogales,AZ and he's in Tucson weekly. So if your friend does want to borrow it (free of charge) I just need to know the dates so I can check to make sure it's available. But I totally understand if he wants to buy one.

So I'll wait for you to let me know. :)

Hope all is well!!!

He needs it the weekend of Saturday, Oct. 16th. I told him to wait to buy one until we find out about the possibility of loaning him one!
