I think that a lot of what this guy has to say on the topic could be helpful to someone wrestling with this, um, bizarre story.

My own view is that Genesis is not a reporting of facts, per se, but rather a series of stories of truth. I think the stories are meant to illustrate the beginning of a very complicated relationship between human beings and their Creator, and also meant to illustrate the history of people's conflicts (and resolutions) with each other. The stories begin to answer the questions, "Who are we?" (creatures of a personal God) "Where do we come from?" (earth, but somehow made in the image of God) "Where are we going?" (somewhere with God...) |
