Some of you know Jesse [who just turned 16!] has had a lot of back problems that have been diagnosed as scoliosis and Scheuermann's kyphosis [that's 2 kinds of curvature in his spine]. He's been increasingly in a lot of pain over the past few years and the surgeon feels like this would be a good point to do the surgery. The surgery is scheduled for this Tues 13 Sept in the morning. It's a pretty involved surgery that should take around 6 hours. He'll be in the hospital [Tucson Medical Center] for 5-7 days and then he'll come home with a lot of physical restrictions and pain meds. He'll be doing school from home once he's more coherent and may be home for the rest of the semester depending on how quickly he heals. [No skateboarding for at least 6 months--poor guy!] His surgeon has done this surgery a lot with a high success rate and seems to be using the least invasive, most advanced techniques for the surgery.

So, please pray for Jesse and us and all the doctors and nurses and techs involved in the surgery and after-care.

Thanks,
Julie

Surgery puts 2 screws in each vertibrae (about 8 vertibrae) then attaches them to 2 rods. Just heard. Screws are in, now putting rods in + straightening spine. About 1 '/2 hrs left.

Surgery is done. Successful. Jesse is doing well. He's still in recovery, but is vaguely awake + says he's ok. We haven't seen him yet. Thanks for praying.

Jesse is doing great. All the drs + nurses keep saying he must be a great athlete (Keith will now have to acknowledge that skateboarding is a sport!) because all his numbers (heart rate, blood pressure, etc) are so good + he can already help reposition himself (which they have to do every 2hrs). He has a morphine pump that he can use every 30min, which he's quite ready for @that point, but he's on a lower dose of morphine than he could have (2mg).

Jesse just sat up on the side of his bed for about 10min, surpassing expectations of nurses and physical therapist. They changed his bandages and everything looks good. He's ready for some sleep now...

Jesse had a rough nite. Bad morphine dreams + woke up tense w/back spasms. Nurses last nite were definitely NOT on their A-game, but our fav nurse Ale is on today. He stood up + sat in a chair for ~15min + had couple swigs of mtn dew. On clear liquids now. Seems to be catching up on sleep now. Found out this am that he was supposed to be able to hit the pain button every 10min, not 30, so he really is the super-trooper! Will continue to work on sitting/standing stamina w/PT this pm.

Better night. Although transition to oral meds was a bit rough. They're "as needed" so we have to stay on top of them during this early stage. He had a couple rough spots waiting for meds to kick in. He's getting up for meals and today was ok'ed for regular food. He had a nectarine (thanks, Kaytee) for breakfast. He's off ICU status and now only has one tube in him (pumps a kind of novacaine into the surgery site). That'll be gone in a day or two. His spirits are pretty good. He's in room 271 at TMC, if anyone wants to drop by.
